STUDY GUIDE

STUDY DURATION

Study Duration

The duration of studies in the Postgraduate Program (P.M.S.) leading to the award of a Master’s Degree (M.Sc.) is set at four (4) academic semesters, which includes the time allocated for the completion of the master’s thesis.

Part-time study is permitted, following a reasoned request by the student and approval by the Assembly of the Medical School. The right to apply for part-time study is granted to:

a) Students who can prove they are employed for at least twenty (20) hours per week,
b) Students with disabilities and special educational needs,
c) Students who are also athletes and during their studies are members of sports clubs registered in the electronic register of sports associations under Article 142 of Law 4714/2020 (Government Gazette A’ 148), maintained by the General Secretariat of Sports, provided that:

  • (ca) They achieve a ranking from 1st to 8th place in national championships of individual sports with at least twelve (12) participants and eight (8) clubs involved, or they compete in the top two divisions of team sports, or they participate as members of national teams in European championships, world championships, or other international events under the Hellenic Olympic Committee, or

  • (cb) They participate at least once during their studies in Olympic, Paralympic, or Deaflympic Games. Students in this subcategory may register as part-time students upon submitting a request approved by the Dean of the School of Health Sciences.

The duration of part-time study cannot exceed twice the length of regular study. The maximum permitted duration of studies still applies in this case.

An extension of the study period may be granted upon a reasoned request by the student and approval by the Assembly. The extension cannot exceed two (2) academic semesters. Hence, the maximum permissible time to complete the program is six (6) academic semesters.

Students who have not exceeded the maximum duration of study may, upon a reasoned request to the Assembly of the Medical School, interrupt their studies for a period not exceeding two (2) semesters. Study suspension is granted for serious reasons (e.g., military service, illness, maternity leave, travel abroad, etc.).

The request must be substantiated and accompanied by relevant supporting documents from competent public authorities or organizations, proving the reasons for the suspension. Student status is suspended during the interruption period, and participation in any educational activities is not allowed. The suspension semesters do not count toward the maximum study duration.

At least two weeks before the end of the suspension period, the student must re-enroll in the program to resume their studies with the rights and obligations of an active student. Students may also request to terminate the suspension early and return to the program, but only if they initially requested a two-semester suspension. Such requests must be submitted no later than two weeks before the start of the second suspension semester.

The duration of a suspension or extension of studies is reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis by the Program Committee (S.E.), which submits a recommendation to the Assembly of the Medical School.
